Ketevan Magalashvili

1894-1973

Famous painter and public figure K. Magalashvili was born in Kutaisi. In 1911 she began her studies in Tbilisi school of Fine Arts, departament of painting and sculpture. Her teachers were Jakob Nicoladze, Mose Toidze and Oscar Shmerling.

During 1914-1917 she's been studing in Moscow; famous painters Korovin and Kasatkin were her tutors. In 1917, after the revolution, she returned Tbilisi and started working in the newly established National Gallery. Director of the gallery Dimitri Shevardnadze played a big role in creating the painter K. Magalashvili. In 1923 she joined a group of painters D. Kakabadze, L. Gudiashvili, H. Akhvlediani, Sh. Kikodze who were living in Paris at the time; There she was refining her work in the Academy of Kolaros.

In 1926-1937 she worked as a restorer, was also making copies of miniatures and frescos. K. Magalashvili was among the intelligencia and was creating portraits of her contemporaries-H. Akhvlediani, J. Nicoladze, Soliko Virsaladze, B. Kuftin etc.
